| I. Purpose
A. The Rye Public Library provides Kindle Readers to enable patrons with low vision to continue to enjoy reading, whether by using the Kindle’s new “read to me” feature or by use of the selectable font size, or both.
B. Kindle readers are made available for patrons to explore this new technology.
II. Collection Development
A. In accordance with the first Kindle gift, the library will offer the Wall Street Journal.
B. Initial purchases of content for the Kindle will focus on news and current events, and best sellers, which may or may not be available in a large print edition.
C. Kindles may be used to offer a low-cost alternative to satisfying some interlibrary loan requests.
E. Patrons requests will be filled at the staff’s discretion.
F. There will be a 24-hour delay for special requests while the book is downloaded and cataloged.
III. Acquisition
A. Content for the Kindle will be selected and purchased through the library’s usual acquisitions process.
B. Purchasing and downloading content is the only time that the Library’s account needs to be activated on the Kindle. At all other times, and especially when out on loan, the Kindle account will be deactivated so that patrons cannot download content and charge it to the Library’s account.
IV. Cataloging and Classification
A. The Kindle itself will be cataloged, and the display will show all the items currently loaded on the Kindle.
B. Kindle content will be cataloged in the MARC 246 alternate title field as part of the record for the Kindle reader. Content titles will be followed by “[Kindle]”.
V. Borrowing
A. Patrons are responsible for any damage, loss, or theft of the Kindle while it is checked out to them.
B. Kindles are loaned out for a period of two (2) weeks to any adult patron in good standing (no outstanding fines over $10, no lost items outstanding, no overdue items, etc.)
C. Patrons may place a hold for a Kindle on-line, in person, or over the phone. The Kindle will be held for three (3) days if there are more people on the waiting list. After three days the next person on the list will be contacted.
D. The late fee for the Kindle will be $1 per day.
E. If not out on loan, a Kindle may be borrowed for use in the library for up to two (2) hours.
F. There are no technical impediments to the borrower activating their own Amazon account on the Library’s Kindle. Each time the Kindle is returned, it will be checked to make sure that no account is activated on it.
