Leviathan's Master, with author David Quinn |
Thursday July 22, 2010 at 7:00pm |
|
Join Author David Quinn for a discussion of his 2009 novella Leviathan’s Master; The Wreck of the World’s Largest Sailing Ship, a Best Books award finalist with USABookNews.com. Quinn will appear for a presentation, reading and book-signing on Thursday July 22 at 7:00 pm at Rye Public Library.
Leviathan’s Master describes the loss of the largest sailing vessel ever built at the time of the 1907 wreck. The four-hundred foot, seven-masted schooner T.W. Lawson set sail for its first trans-Atlantic crossing bound for London with a cargo of more than two million gallons of kerosene.
With almost fifty years of sailing experience, Captain George W. Dow was not intimidated, dspite the Lawson’s huge reputation. Hurricane winds and an angry sea conspire, though, to defeat man and machine. Bereft of her sails, the giant ship is trapped in treacherous shoals off the southwest coast of Britain. Seventeen lives are lost, including a local pilot trying to avert disaster. Now, Captain Dow is called to account—most especially to himself.
David Quinn, (Captain Dow’s great, great nephew) tells the true story of the T.W. Lawson in the form of a gripping novella in the acclaimed book Leviathan’s Master. Hear more about this historical adventure from the unique perspective of the ancestor of the ship’s captain at the presentation, reading and book-signing held at Rye Public Library.

We Were Soldiers Once...and Young: Ia Drang - the Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam, by Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway |
| |
In one of the most savage and significant engagements between American troops and the Viet Cong, 450 U.S. Soldiers were dropped by helicopter into the la Drang Valley and were immediately surrounded by 2000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, a sister battalion nearby was decimated. These actions at landing zones X-Ray and Albany would become crucial battles in the war. General Harold Moore, who commanded the men of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry and Joseph Galloway, the only reporter who witnessed the 34 days of battle, interviewed hundreds of men who fought, including the North Vietnamese commanders. How these soldiers faced the ultimate challenge, persevered and sacrifice themselves for the comrades, creates a vivid and gripping portrait of war at its most heroic and horrendous. |
